Nestled in the picturesque Chautauqua County, Chautauqua is a hidden gem town known for its natural beauty and cultural offerings. Located in western New York, it’s about an hour’s drive from Buffalo and just a stone’s throw from Lake Erie. Chautauqua is also conveniently located for visitors from major cities like New York City, Philadelphia, and Buffalo.
Brett and I enjoyed a weekend getaway with just the two of us. We took a road trip from Philadelphia (about 6 hours), but you can also fly into Buffalo and drive. Maybe catch a Bills game on the way down. This is the perfect destination for a couple, family, or group of friends.
We were hosted for this trip by Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau. They made sure every detail of our trip was memorable. Be sure to browse through their website for the best tips to make your getaway exceptional too!

Things to Do:
National Comedy Center

Dive deeper into the world of comedy at the National Comedy Center, located in nearby Jamestown. This interactive museum pays homage to the comedic greats and offers a fun and educational experience for all ages. The center doesn’t just focus on the past; it also highlights contemporary comedians and their contributions to the world of humor. You’ll find exhibits and displays that showcase the work of today’s comedians and the ways comedy continues to evolve.
We had so much fun here! I love how you set your comedy profile when you enter and that follows you throughout the center. Each visitor receives a unique RFID wristband that allows them to customize their experience. The wristband stores your preferences and can be used to access personalized content throughout the center. At the end, they show you your true comedy profile based on how you interacted during your time there.
P.S. They have a very fun karaoke style stand up and a bar with food and drinks. Everyone in the family is sure to have a great time here! I can see how they were rated Top 25 Family Weekend Getaways in the US from U.S. News.
If you are going with kids, I’d skip the Blue Room. The Blue Room is a unique exhibit within the National Comedy Center that delves into the world of blue comedy. Blue comedy is a subgenre of humor known for its risqué, adult, or explicit content. The Blue Room explores the history and evolution of blue comedy in America, showcasing its impact on comedy and culture. If you’re going with just adults like us, don’t miss this area! It is at the end and an elevator down (so separated).

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnav Museum

The museum features a wide range of exhibits that showcase Lucille Ball’s life, from her early days in Jamestown to her Hollywood career and her groundbreaking work in television. You can explore memorabilia, costumes, photographs, and interactive displays that provide a comprehensive look at her remarkable journey.
Make this a stop on your trip! It offers a chance to relive the laughter and joy that their work brought to countless fans over the years. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of “I Love Lucy” or you’re simply interested in the history of American television, this museum provides a heartwarming and educational experience that’s not to be missed.
Roger Tory Peterson Institute

Nature enthusiasts will be captivated by the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, a tribute to the famous naturalist and wildlife artist. Discover the beauty of the natural world through art and exhibits.
I’ll be honest, I had no idea who Roger Tory Peterson was until we explored this beautiful building. By the way, it really was a stunning architectural gem crafted by Robert A.M. Stern.
Once, I saw that Roger Tory Peterson created this guide, I knew exactly who he was! We learned so much about the Institute and their committment to the future and showcasing Art that Matters.
“Through world class exhibitions and programs, RTPI illuminates the beauty of nature; challenges us to confront environmental issues of regional, national and global concern; and inspires us to preserve the earth’s biodiversity – with a particular emphasis on the natural area wonders of Western New York.” –from their website

Panama Rocks Scenic Park

Venture into the great outdoors at Panama Rocks, a unique natural wonderland known for its rock formations. Towering boulders, crevices, and narrow passageways create a maze-like network that you can explore. These formations were created by the erosion of soft sandstone, resulting in captivating shapes and patterns.
We were lucky enough to go doing a fall festival, so check their site for updates of events.
Nonetheless, we had a unique time climbing some rocks, exploring caves, and then throwing axes after (our first time doing it and we both got it on the board!).
Bemus Point Golf Club & Tap House

Golf enthusiasts will love teeing off at the Bemus Point Golf Club, a scenic golf course that offers challenging play against the backdrop of Chautauqua Lake. After your game, head to the Tap House for a delicious brunch to refuel.
We decided to golf through some fog and it was an incredible experience. As soon as we finished the 9 holes (that’s how many there are on this course), the fog cleared up. We laughed and headed inside to get brunch at the Tap House.

We ordered the Bloody Mary (the cheese cube was a fun surprise!), Avocado Toast, and Eggs Benny! 10/10

We ordered the calamari, Farafalle Gorgonzola Chicken (very very very blue cheesy), Seasonal special: Pork Schnitzel with sweet potato mash, and a side of everything mashed potatoes. Brett got an old fashioned that was delivered with smoke in a dish, the bread basket was AMAZING and came with three sides (olive tapenade, cream cheese, and butter), and we got FREE chocolate covered cherries at the end.
